High Precision Machining of a Displacement Sensor for Helicoidal Motions

This research study presents the design and high precision manufacture procedure of a fiber-optic displacement sensor. It is composed two probes associated with structure cones’ grating. The sensor characterized by its ability to measure linear for an axis performing helicoidal motion. motion has been demonstrated on lathe; where spindle provided rotational motion, translational stage. allowed obtain simultaneous motions. stage measured in real time. Firstly, highly precise geometric model reflector part was developed. specific geometry cones-assembled grating, which precisely manufactured. parameters surface characteristics each step fabricated grating were both identified situ lathe. agreement between simulation experimental results excellent. performances in-situ analysis voltage output signals from used displacement. unbalanced rotation due non-centered axes also characterized. micrometric resolution, measurement range more than one centimeter.
